This position requires the individual to be located in the Plymouth, MN area.
Our client is a premier provider of custom mechanization for iconic structures and attractions that create unforgettable experiences. We partner with engineers, architects, and construction managers to mitigate risk and deliver functionally integrated, reliable systems.
Our team designs and delivers custom, project-specific engineered systems that often have no precedent—spanning industries such as Aerospace, Amusement & Entertainment, Stadiums & Ballparks, Telescope Observatories, and Custom Crane Systems.
This is not a traditional structural engineering environment. Our work sits at the intersection of structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering—bringing complex, moving systems to life through innovative design, fabrication, and real-world implementation.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a Structural Project Engineer to support the design and execution of custom mechanized structural systems—from early concept through fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving non-standard, highly complex problems where traditional codes and templates may not fully apply. You will be responsible for developing structural designs that interact with mechanical systems, require system-level thinking, and rely heavily on sound engineering judgment.
You will play a key role in multidisciplinary project teams, contributing to technical decisions, evaluating trade-offs, and ensuring designs meet safety, performance, and constructability requirements.
This is not a traditional building or infrastructure design role. Candidates with experience limited to commercial/residential buildings or municipal infrastructure may not find alignment with the type of work performed at Uni.
Responsibilities:
Discipline-Specific Responsibilities
-
Develop conceptual and detailed structural designs for custom systems, including structures that support or enable motion and mechanical functionality
-
Perform structural analysis using appropriate methods, including FEA where applicable, to evaluate system behavior, load paths, and failure modes
-
Estimate weights, member sizing, and system behavior for proposal development and early-stage design
-
Produce structural calculations, drawings, and supporting documentation
-
Evaluate designs for constructability, fabrication feasibility, and installation considerations
-
Participate in prototype development and testing when required to validate design assumptions
-
Conduct shop and field inspections to ensure design intent is achieved
-
Stay current with applicable codes, while applying engineering judgment in situations where codes do not fully govern the design As Project Engineer
-
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, controls) to ensure fully integrated system design
-
Communicate directly with clients to clarify requirements and present technical solutions
-
Develop and manage design budgets and schedules during the engineering phase
-
Actively participate in design reviews with internal teams, clients, contractors, and external partners
-
Interface with fabrication shops, vendors, and field teams to support execution and resolve issues
-
Provide regular project updates including technical progress, risks, and resource needs
-
Assist in procurement efforts, including material selection and vendor coordination
-
Support installation and commissioning activities as needed Additional Contributions
-
Support proposal development with technical input, concept generation, and risk identification
-
Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, design standards, and execution methods
-
Assist in developing technical content for marketing or industry publications as needed
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
-
Must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR due to access to export-controlled technical data
-
B.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
-
5+ years of relevant engineering experience (or 3+ years with M.S.)
-
E.I.T. certification
-
Experience with 3D modeling and structural analysis tools
-
Strong understanding of structural fundamentals including statics, dynamics, load paths, and system behavior
-
Ability to solve complex problems with limited predefined guidance or code-based solutions
-
Demonstrated ability to take ownership of designs and confidently defend engineering decisions
-
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines
-
Self-directed, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities Preferred Qualifications
-
P.E. or S.E. licensure
-
Experience with tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, SAP2000, RISA, or similar analysis/modeling platforms
-
Exposure to mechanical systems, moving structures, or custom engineered equipment
-
Experience working on projects involving fabrication, installation, or commissioning
-
Familiarity with dynamic loading, vibration, or system-level behavior
-
Experience supporting prototype development or test-based validation
-
Knowledge of fabrication methods, materials, and machine shop processes
Success in this role requires comfort operating in ambiguous design environments, where problems are not fully defined and solutions must be developed through a combination of engineering principles, creativity, and practical implementation.
Engineers who thrive at Uni are those who are curious, hands-on, collaborative, and motivated to see their designs come to life in the real world.
